The Lead: Storm Emeralda Revealed
The biggest Pokémon TCG story this week was the reveal of all 76 main-set cards from Storm Emeralda, Japan’s next expansion. The set releases July 31, is led by Mega Rayquaza ex and is expected to feed into the English Delta Reign set in November.
The most unusual cards are three new paired Stadiums: Legendary Ocean Trench, Legendary Summit and Legendary Lava Lake. Stadiums are Trainer cards that remain in play and affect both players until another Stadium replaces them.
Each of these Stadiums is divided across two separate cards. You must have both halves in your hand and play them together, at which point they function as one Stadium. Placed side by side, the artwork connects to form one large landscape scene.
This is the first time Pokémon has used the two-card mechanic for Stadiums. I am not sure what collector demand will look like for these, particularly since grading and displaying the complete artwork presents an obvious challenge. I will get into that when I review the full set.
For now, I am waiting to see the complete secret-rare lineup, particularly Mega Rayquaza. That card will probably determine the ceiling for the entire set.

Pokémon showcased the full Pitch Black product lineup. My view has not changed. This looks more like a set where I let other people open the packs and buy the best singles.
The three most valuable raw cards at launch, in order, are:
Mega Darkrai ex (#116/84)
Mega Darkrai ex - Gold (#120/84)
Morpeko ex (#117/84)
There is no reason to chase these now while supply is still entering the market.
Market & Distribution
Japan’s official Pokémon Card Stores will begin using facial recognition. The system is intended to stop customers from entering multiple times or obtaining more than one purchase ticket.
This is not a direct investing signal, but it shows how difficult retail distribution remains in Japan. Pokémon is moving beyond purchase limits and lotteries to technology specifically designed to stop repeat buyers and scalpers. If it works, it may reduce some of the immediate resale premium created by organized buyers. It does not mean more product is being printed.
This is why I don’t like business models that depend on buying products at retail and immediately flipping them for a profit. As we discussed in the First Partner promo review, retailers will keep finding new ways to restrict that behavior.
Card Watch
Growlithe and Groudon received Illustration Rares in Storm Emeralda. Growlithe is a popular Pokémon that does not receive as many major illustration cards as some comparable characters. I expect the card to have steady collector demand.
Groudon has the higher ceiling. I’ll be comparing its early pricing with the Japanese and English versions of the Raging Surf and Paradox Rift Groudon Illustration Rare. The main thing I’m waiting for is the Mega Rayquaza chase card. The Rayquaza VMAX from Evolving Skies is still one of the best returns on investment I’ve ever had on a single card.
Watching Next Week
The remaining Storm Emeralda secret rares - I’ll be interested to see the Mega Rayquaza rare. It’s a popular character and assuming the artwork is good, generally makes an excellent investment candidate.
The Japanese launch on July 31 - I will be watching booster-box pricing, pull rates and the first real sales of the top cards.
The second week of Pitch Black pricing - The question is not which cards started highest. It is which cards continue finding buyers as more supply reaches the market and prices start to solidify.
