2. The PSA 10 Absorption Phase

In the early days of a promo’s life, supply hits the market from participants looking for a quick flip. We are currently moving past that “supply glut” into the Absorption Phase.

• The Logic: As we transition into the 30th Anniversary era in 2026, serious collectors are “gobbling up” existing PSA 10 slabs to lock them into long-term personal collections.

• The Multiplier: When a card is out-of-print, every PSA 10 that enters a “permanent collection” is effectively removed from the tradable market. This creates a “supply floor” that slowly ratchets the price upward as secondary market availability thins out.

3. Velocity Over “Blue-Chip” Stagnation

Vintage Charizards are iconic, but they are “Large-Cap” assets: they require massive capital for potentially slow, incremental growth.

• The Alpha: Buying a specialized modern promo at $160 gives you a much higher ROI potential over 12–24 months than a $20,000 vintage card does.

• The Exit: It is significantly easier to find a buyer for a $320 unique promo in 2027 than it is to find a buyer for a $30,000 vintage holo. We are playing for velocity and liquidity, which are the two most important factors for a side-hustle portfolio.

Bottom Line: I’m not buying “shiny cardboard.” I’m buying a fixed-supply tournament asset during a window where the general market is distracted by new English sets. In a couple of years, it will be exceedingly difficult to find these cards and you’ll pay a premium. That is how you manufacture alpha.

Front of the Card — Quick Reference Map

While the design of a standard Pokémon card has evolved, the core layout remains remarkably consistent across eras. Here is a quick-reference guide to a card's front:

• Name — The Pokemon’s Name.

• Stage — Shows where the Pokémon is in its evolution line:

Modern sets are defined by a complex hierarchy of card types, featuring unique foiling, textures, and alternate art. Recognizing these distinctions is critical for navigating the market, whether you are assembling a master set or evaluating a card's long-term potential.—here’s your guide to the key ones:

• Reverse Holo: Foil background with non‑foil art window. Each holographic or reverse holographic card typically has a non-holo version which is more common. The holo versions are rare and more valuable.

• Full Art / Ultra Rare: Extended artwork that reaches the edges, often textured; stronger chase tier.

  

• Special / Illustration / Alternate Art: Scene‑style showcases with low pull rates—modern favorites. These are highly collectible.

Your inspection process should mirror the standards of major grading houses like PSA, CGC, and BGS, focusing strictly on the 'Big Four': Centering, Corners, Edges, and Surface.

What Actually Drives Value (The Big Five)

Fast Red Flags

Here are some of the biggest, easiest red flags that scream “fake” or “bad condition” the second you see them:

• Front and back language/style don’t match (e.g., English front with Japanese back).

• High-end modern cards (Full Arts/Alt Arts) should have etched texture. If it’s smooth and glossy, it’s likely fake.

Each Pokémon card shows the creature’s name, HP (hit points), type (Fire, Water, etc.), and one or more attacks. Many Pokémon evolve—you start with a Basic Pokémon and can play Stage 1 and Stage 2 versions on top of it to make it stronger.

You’ll also see era labels on some Pokémon (like ex, GX, V, VMAX, VSTAR). Those are just different generations’ “power” cards—cool, flashy versions that often come with special abilities.

2) Trainer cards (the helpers)

Trainer cards make your deck work.

• Items are quick one-time effects (search your deck, switch Pokémon, etc.).

• Supporters are stronger effects you can usually play once per turn (big draw/search).

• Stadiums are cards that sit in play and change the “arena” for both players.

3) Energy cards (the fuel)

Attacks cost Energy. Basic Energy (like Fire or Water) match the Pokémon’s type. Special Energy sometimes add a useful bonus (draw, heal, etc.). If you’ve ever played a board game that needs resources to act, Energy is that resource.

How the game is played?

1. At the start, both players shuffle their 60-card decks, draw 7 cards, put a Basic Pokémon face-down as the Active (and any others on the Bench, up to 5), set 6 “Prize cards” face-down, then flip the Active up; a coin flip decides who goes first.

2. On your turn you draw 1 card, play Trainer cards to set up, attach 1 Energy for the turn, optionally evolve Pokémon that have been in play since a previous turn, and then attack with your Active Pokémon to try to knock out the opponent’s Active and take a Prize;

3. First to take all 6 Prizes (or leave the opponent with no Pokémon or no cards to draw) wins.

4. Turn flow (simple): draw → play Trainers → attach 1 Energy → evolve (if able) → retreat (optional) → attack.

5. Win conditions: take all 6 Prize cards or opponent has no Pokémon in play or opponent can’t draw at the start of their turn.

That’s it in a nutshell. There are additional strategies and nuances involved, but that’s not necessary for understanding the investment side of Pokemon.

Sets, releases, and rarity

Cards release in sets several times a year. Most sets are “main sets”, but you will also see “special sets” that are only sold in specific products like gift tins or Elite Trainer Boxes. (and typically include Promo cards).

Collectors organize these sets into Eras. An Era typically lasts about 3 years and aligns with the current generation of the Pokémon video games on Nintendo consoles. For example:

• Sword & Shield Era (2020–2023): Based on the Switch games.

• Scarlet & Violet Era (2023–Present): The current era.

Inside every set, cards appear at different rarity levels. For now just remember this ladder:

• Common → Uncommon → Rare → Holo (classic shiny foil) → Ultra/Full Art (big, textured art) → Special art (scene-style showcase) → Secret Rare (numbered past the set’s size, e.g., 205/198).

Rarer cards are harder to pull and tend to be more sought after—but rarity alone doesn’t guarantee value. Character, art, and condition still matter most. We’ll dive deeper into this in future articles.

Formats & “Rotation” (why players care—and what collectors should know)

There are two main ways people play:

• Standard: the main competitive format. Each year, older sets rotate out to keep the game fresh.

• Expanded: a larger pool that includes older sets (with its own ban list).

Why this matters to you: when a card becomes a popular competitive staple, prices can spike short-term. When formats rotate or the metagame shifts, those spikes can fade. Long-term collectors focus more on art, characters, rarity, and condition; players care about what wins right now.

The Competitive Scene

While many investors like myself collect the art, there is a massive competitive circuit that drives the game’s popularity (and market).

• Locals & Regionals: Players start at local game stores and work their way up to massive Regional Championships, where thousands of players compete in convention centers for cash prizes.

• The World Championships: This is the “Super Bowl” of Pokémon. Held once a year in a different major city (like London, Yokohama, or Honolulu), the best players from around the globe compete for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Why this matters to you: The World Championships are a major market event. The specific decks that win “Worlds” often become part of Pokémon history, and the cards in those decks can see price spikes. Furthermore, exclusive “Promo cards” given only to competitors or staff at these events are among the rarest and most expensive investments in the hobby.

What is Pokémon?

Pokémon, short for “Pocket Monsters,” is a massively popular Japanese media franchise create by Satoshi Tajiri and owned by The Pokémon Company (a joint venture between Nintendo, Game Freak, and Creatures Inc.).

It centers on fictional creatures called Pokémon (over 1,000 species to date), living alongside humans in a shared universe. Humans known as Pokémon Trainers catch these creatures using Poké Balls, train them, and battle others in strategic turn-based fights (e.g., Fire beats Grass but loses to Water), abilities, and evolutions (where Pokémon transform into stronger forms).

The franchise spans

• Video Games: Role-playing adventures on Nintendo consoles, starting with Pokémon Red and Green on Game Boy.

• Anime & Movies: Follows young Trainer Ash Ketchum and his Pikachu on endless quests.

• Trading Card Game (TCG): A collectible card game where you build decks to duel opponents.

• Merchandise: Toys, clothes, apps like Pokémon GO (over 1 billion downloads), and more.

As of 2025, it’s the highest-grossing media franchise ever, with over $150 billion in lifetime revenue. In 2024 alone, Pokémon toys topped $1 billion in sales, the only brand to do so. The company hit record profits of $2.9 billion, boosted by mobile hits like Pokémon TCG Pocket. It launched in 1996 with Pokémon Red and Green for Game Boy in Japan (Red/Blue internationally in 1998), sparking “Pokémania”. It has expanded into anime (starting 1997, following trainer Ash Ketchum), over 20 films, manga, a trading card game (TCG, the best-selling ever with billions of cards), merchandise, and mobile hits like Pokémon GO (2016 augmented reality app).

Timeline of Pokémon Milestones

Below is a timeline to give you sense of the important dates and milestones in the Pokemon brand. We will mainly be focused on products in the modern era, although it’s important to understand some of the history.

• 1996 First Video Games (1996 Japan/1998 USA): Red/Blue/Green sells millions; anime follows.

• 1996 TGC Card Game Launches (1996 Japan/1999 USA): The card games in the United States are launched through Wizards of the Coast. Early english sets are called Base, Jungle, & Fossil.

• 2002-2007 “Chase” Cards Appear: New powerful cards called EX show up (think: stronger versions of Pokemon). Gold Star cards become a big collectors item.

• 2007-2013 Better Art: Card artwork quality noticeably improves.

• 2016 Pokemon GO App: AR mobile game reignites frenzy. Billions in revenue follows. First full art cards are introduced.

• 2020s Modern Era Boom: Includes the eras Sun&Moon, Sword&Shield, and Scarlet&Violet. TCG explodes; 75+ billion cards are printed. Scarlet & Violet sells 25m+ units.

By end of year 2025, 489 million games and 75 billion Pokemon cards have been sold since the franchise’s inception. This shows the staying power of the brand.

Iconic Pokémon: The Cast of Characters

Over 1,000 species exist in the Pokemon Universe, but these characters reign supreme (per fan polls and sales). Anyone serious about making money in Pokémon products better know them.

1. Pikachu: Franchise mascot—cute electric mouse, Ash’s partner.

2. Charizard: Fiery dragon; typically the most valuable cards (e.g., 1st Edition PSA 10: $200K+).

3. Eevee & Evolutions (Umbreon, etc.): Versatile, adorable foxes.

4. Mewtwo: Psychic legend from the first movie.

5. Bulbasaur/Squirtle: Fan-favorite starters.

These characters drive merchandise and card values in much the same manner as Disney stars like Donald & Goofy—Pikachu alone is a cultural icon in Japan, their version of Mickey Mouse.

Is Pokémon A Good Investment: Historical Performance

What started as a kids’ game now rivals stocks from a return perspective. Vintage cards (1999 Base Set) have returned 3,000-3,800% over 20 years, crushing the S&P 500’s 483%. Booster boxes like Evolving Skies surged 1,697% in 5 years.

Value Factors:

• Rarity/Condition: PSA 10 grades multiply worth (e.g., Logan Paul paid $5.275 million for the world’s most expensive Pokémon card — the1998 Pikachu Illustrator in a PSA 10).

• Nostalgia: Millennials fuel demand.

• Supply Control: Limited prints and low pull rates keep prices high.

• Market: eBay searches hit 14K/hour; GameStop now sells TCG.

Risks:

• Oversupply dips modern cards; They can reprint sold out sets.

• Fakes abound (beware!). I’ll help teach you to spot fakes in a separate article.

• Long-term winners: Sealed vintage product, graded Charizards.

• Net ROI: +360% to +385% (≈ 4.69x to 4.85× your money)

This is a big win, especially if you’d bought 10–20 of them. This is a bit of an outlier, not every card performs this well. But it shows the potential gains that exist in Pokemon cards.

Step 1: The Buy-In

Every great investment starts with conviction. I don’t chase hype; I hunt cards with scarcity + demand + cultural staying power. Below is the card in this example.

• The Card: Umbreon VMAX Alternate Art (#215)

• Era: Sword & Shield

• Set: Evolving Skies

• Release Date: August 27, 2021

• Pull Rate: ~1/1,994 packs (i.e., how many packs to open before pulling one)

• My Entry: June 2023 @ $660.33 raw

I purchased it for $660.33 on June 06, 2023. A little over 24 months ago.

Why this card?

• It was the most popular card in the most popular set in the Sword & Shield era.

• Umbreon is an extremely popular character in the Pokemon universe.

• The card is extremely rare (1,994 packs to pull just one)

• The print run ended in 2021. All of the PSA 10 graded versions now mostly sit in personal collections, and those collectors will never let them go.

• The card itself is beautiful. It’s hard to explain unless you have it in front of you. But every time you adjust it under the light, new details emerge. The printing techniques used to make this card are extremely difficult. It’s special compared to an average Pokemon card.

Step 2: Grading

Raw cards don’t command the price premium that a highly graded slabbed version can. Sometimes I’ll buy cards already graded and sometimes I buy them raw. I’ll cover grading in a separate article, but when I receive a raw card in the mail and it appears mint or better, I send it off to get it graded (I don’t recommend this for beginners).

Given the condition of this particular card, I had it graded for the cost of $20, and it came back a PSA 10. So we add that into the cost when calculating return.

Grading:

• Cost: $20

• Result: PSA 10

• New All-In Cost: $680.33

Population Report Reality Check:

PSA issues a population report for any card that tells you how many have been submitted for grading and how many received a coveted 10. Get familiar with it as it provides valuable information. I looked up the population report for this card when writing this article, and here’s the information

• 18,873 PSA 10s out of 26,383 graded = ~72% gem rate

• Cost to pull 1 raw Umbreon: 1,994 packs × $5 = ~$9,970

• Need 1.4 pulls for a PSA 10 → ~$14,000 raw cost equivalent

That means to pull this card organically by opening packs might cost me up to $10,000. To find one in good enough shape to grade a 10, I might have to pull 2, bringing the cost of packs up to $14,000. That’s why purchasing on a marketplace for $600 is such a steal.

Remember PSA 10s always trade at premiums. It’s difficult both to pull one of these extremely rare cards and have it in top-tier condition.

Step 3: The Wait

I typically follow a 12–24 month hold rule for my Pokémon investments. Why?

• It gives time for any reprints of the set to happen so the total population of the card is known.

• Collectors and investors gobble up the top cards over the 12-24 month period following the initial release. This continues to squeeze the available supply, driving up the price.

• During the waiting period, I track:

  • The PSA population report.

  • Completed transactions to see where the card is clearing the market.

  • Ignore fluctuations—this card dipped multiple times.

Step 4: The Return - 550% ROI in 24 Months

Let’s take a look at the result.

• June 2025 comp: PSA 10 sold for $3,749

• All-in cost: $680.33

• Gross profit: $3,068.67

• Net after 13% fees: ~$3,180 → 468% return

Metric

• Buy Price (Raw) — $660.33

• Grading Cost — $20.00

• Total Invested — $680.33

• Sell Price (PSA 10) — $3,749

• Gross ROI — +451%

• Net ROI (after fees) — +368%

Yes, this is an outlier. But I find you can consistently get 2x or greater returns on average, even if the card doesn’t end up being a home run.
